Mmm... no noise. This ambient CD is very quiet. I’ll go and check if it’s playing. No it isn’t. Oops. Ok I can hear things now! Rion is Ryo Nakata (aka Ryonkt and the chap who runs the Small Fragments label) and Ian Hawgood (who is Ian Hawgood and he runs the Home Normal label). The whole package is brought to us by Hibernate who are on a campaign to bring ambient music into every household in the UK. Keep an eye out for the leaflets coming through your letterboxes.
Ryo recorded layers of guitar drone whilst Ian recorded a variety of instruments, parks and countryside in a field-music like fashion. Apparently no computers were used or harmed during the process of this album. Hot drones are throbbing away as I type. Strange noises in the background pock and fizzle away whilst the melodies burst through this multi layered ambient dronefest. It’s normally around this part of the review I say the word texture. You can practically feel the music - it’s that textured. Which is clearly a million different types of crazy. It’s just not possible (yet) although one day I’m pretty sure it will be and that has to be a day to be excited about!
There’s some class dronework throughout the album and for youse who enjoy things quiet and droney whilst having enough experimentation and ideas going on to keep your ears perked then you should really check this out as it is excellent (as you’d expect it to be given the cast!).
