7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 8th November 2014
I love hearing a choir belting out something melodic with energy whether its Mozart’s Requiem or The Brothers and Sisters singing Dylan’s Gospel so I was intrigued by Laura Mvula’s debut album.
For most of this album, there’s no real musical reference point. It is a melting pot of influences, some very musical arrangements and songwriting. There’s jazzy pop on Green Garden”, breathtaking choral blasts on “Like The Morning Due” and heart-wrenching splendor on “She”.
Mvula’s acrobatic voice can sound anywhere between Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse and I’m sure this will appeal to fans of both. My only criticism of this album is that it seems too claustrophobic, tightly produced and edited and given the excellent arranging and musicianship here, I’m sure that is entirely on purpose. However, for me this takes away some of the visceral enjoyment.
