9/10 Brian Staff review, 29 November 2013

It's all top stuff I've had to review from home this week, and this baby I've listened to quite a few times. It's a great collection of Daniel Johnston remakes from two renowned Celtic maestros. There's some really odd murky tape weirdness going on under the version of 'True Love Will Find You In The End' but this doesn't detract from the beauty of the main body of sparse acoustics topped with Adrian Crowley's velvet croon.

'My Yoke Is Heavy' is sing-song beauty with a tender acoustic guitar thrum gradually anchored by warm organ swells and sweet electronic touches. 'Like A Monkey In The Zoo' is superb too - a lo-fi rattler with a great muffled vocal whilst a rolling cavalcade of birdsong mingles with the organic whirr of bicycle bells and chain. It's a sublime version, believe me!

Every song on here warms my cockles on a cold November morning. It's definitely a Christmas-friendly album with its oft-twinkly lullaby and rustic comforting vibe. Each piece is rendered by these two talented gents with absolute love and a heartening amount of re-invention.  All eight tracks have distinctive and delightful embellishments to ensure the song spills with genuine magic.

If you like either of the artists concerned here or just simply adore the songs of Daniel (a man I once found a little tedious I am ashamed to admit) get involved - I implore you!
