- Quitters Raga by Gold Panda
REVIEWS
Gold Panda is back with a new 7" featuring not one but two brand new cuts! Now before I get started let's recap some facts we know about Gold Panda. Firstly, his most recent album 'Half of Where You Live' is his best yet; secondly, he has a habit of saving his most immediate tracks for singles and has a line in better-than-the-A-side B-sides.
'Quitter's Raga' is mental. It starts with this stumbling beat which is joined by a guitar and bass samples with loads of warm vinyl crackle, but it's all really compressed so the volume of the surface noise wavers alongside the beat in a really weird and hypnotic way. Then there's a sitar and some Eastern vocal samples which give it a really bright, rolling feel, along with some playful digital fuckery towards the end. Overleaf 'Fifth Ave' again plays around with the same compression/surface noise trick but in the context of a super-chill beat with loads of subtle FourTet clickiness and understated melodic samples. Both these songs are really good.
10/10 Brodie Customer review, 13th February 2014
I have long wished to own a copy of this 45 that was out of print by the time Lucky Shiner came out on Ghostly International. I can't recommend this enough - the reissue is flawlessly manufactured and Quitters Raga still stands as one of the best Gold Panda tunes he has produced. Any fan of Gold Panda or his label should definitely check this out while you still can... the original release easily fetches over $70USD and if you listen to the A side you'll know why :-) PS. the best review here is definitely by Iz ;-)
