Vivek Sharda first emerged on the dubstep scene in 2007 but only really came to prominence in 2009 with his first of six releases for Mala’s Deep Medi Musik imprint. He’s since gone on to release a 12” for Tectonic and then formed his own label System Music. As the label name explicitly says, this is soundsystem music. What I’ve always liked about this guys stuff is that he really does keep the “Dub” in dubstep and when he’s on point and at his darkest is up there with classic early DMZ material.

This doublepack begins with the deep, slow and really chilled meditative vibes of ‘Mantra’ before we plunge into the dark and techy ‘Show Me’ complete with trancey synth melodies. Then after a Robo-dread intro, some bass pressure with ‘Soundman VIP’, the original of course came out On Deep Medi Musik back in 2001.

‘Asteroids’ from his first System Music 12” also gets the VIP treatment over on side D which is probably my pick of the four tracks on offer. Low tempo, skeletal rhythms and serious bass weight cloaked in smokey spooky atmospherics. Not my favourite V.I.V.E.K release but still well worth checking out.
