Pianist Matthew Shipp invited the radical saxophonist John Butcher to join him during a 2010 residency at Cafe Oto, and here are the crisply-recorded results. Butcher is a master of extended technique, wrangling multiphonics out of his instrument using circular breathing, whereas Shipp is from a more traditionally ‘jazz’ background, producing some interesting meeting points in the music. At Oto is released by Fataka.
