8/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 21st November 2014
Janelle Monae is a genuinely talented performer who exists artistically entirely in her own world. Kind of like Prince, who guests on the album, I guess. “The Electric Lady” is not only a concept album but part of a series of concept albums that include all of her work to date: “Metropolis: Suite 1 (The Chase)” which was an EP and her debut album “The ArchAndroid”. “The Electric Lady” comprises parts 4 and 5 of the Metropolis suite.
There is a lot going on here: soul, hip-hop, rock, jazz, but it’s all so neatly sewn together it flows really well with a fresh energy. “Dance Apocalyptic” has the kind of jazz-pop swing that was evident on “Tightrope” from her debut album. The title track which features Beyonce’s sister Solange has an 80s soul groove. “Q.U.E.E.N.” features Erykah Badu and gets dangerously close to sounding like Roxette’s “Joyride” at times, yet still manages to be good.
I find Janelle Monae to be good for a bit of escapism, not the usual kind of thing I listen to, but she does it really well. Her energy is infectious and incredibly cool.
