Berkshire based artist and poet David Yates, here using the alias Dolly Dolly, has a head-scratching album of cut and splice oddness for us on Exotic Pylon this week. His spoken words are accompanied at various points over the course of the album by a long list of interesting characters which includes the likes of Ekoplekz and Moon Wiring Club.   It's a surreal listen. Yates's voice tends to be the main focus as he calmly recites his verses, some of which make more sense than others, which the press release informs me "were created by a process of cut-ups, automatic writing and dream diaries", although it's unclear if the poems were written for the songs or the other way around, or if they were created independently and then put together. In 'Tiny Tide' it seems like he's narrating the field concrete'n'synth soundscape provided by Language Timothy.   In places his voice is distorted or processed, 'Corptoepose''s disturbingly graphic monologue sounds like it's been dictated through a telephone. Other tracks are just one- or two-line gags, adding to the cut-up feel. It's an absorbing listen but not a particularly comfortable one...kind of quietly thought provoking and obtusely confrontational, but you can't say it's not interesting and unique.
