Erstwhile beatsman Madlib works with MED and Blu for this tight little 12”, which also features guest spots from Mayer Hawthorne and the funky Dam-Funk. Two intoxicating tracks are here, each presented with a generous spread of instrumental and a cappella edits for maximum DJ tool effectiveness. 12” on Bang Ya Head.

I don’t really get to review much hip-hop here at HQ so this is a nice surprise for me on this dreary winter afternoon...

This is one of those typical hip-hop records that have so many names attached to it it’s hard to work out exactly whose record it actually is. The only name I am really familiar with is Los Angeles based DJ supremo Madlib who, over the last few years, has released a plethora of great records. Working with the likes of MF Doom and J Dilla amongst others, Madlib has cemented himself quite neatly into hip-hop history.

Here he gets together with Med and Blu on the Bang Ya Head imprint to produce this eight track 12" of three original songs and their subsequent remixes, radio edits and acappella versions. “The Buzz’ is a soulful jam with a sample of seventies-style sweeping strings, featuring backing vocals from Mayer Hawthorne. Flip over to the B-side and we’re into more MTVBase territory with ‘Peroxide’, a robotic synth beat with the obligatory guns and gold lyrical content.

All the different versions of the songs are pretty much the same but these things tend be for DJs to mix with. Or you could pretend to beatbox along with the acappella version in some desperate attempt to appear down with the kids.
