7/10 Missing Planet Customer review, 27th September 2014

Why review a b-sides collection? They’re disjointed affairs with varying quality that the fans will buy. In this case, there are two and a half reasons.

The first is ‘Clownmaster’. As an instrumental, it’s understandable that it didn’t get included on an album (though it did sometimes have lyrics when performed live). With or without vocals however, it’s a prime example of what this band were about and is better than most of FUEL and half of Copper Blue.

The second is ‘And You Tell Me’. Some days, this is the best song they ever recorded.

The half is ‘After All The Roads Have Led To Nowhere’. It’s an absolute crime this never got a studio recording. The live, full electric version here does not show it at its best (hence the half), but it’s genius was obvious when performed less in your face in the same style as the If I Can’t Change Your Mind solo mix (also included here and as good as the original).

The live tracks that make up two fifths of this album give it away as a compilation, but none of them are bad. Take them out and you’ve got a pretty nifty fourth Sugar album.
