Team Doyobi are an electronic duo (they are always duo’s aren’t they?) originally from that hotbed of electronic composition the Lincolnshire Wolds, then resident in Leeds for many years but now I think one of them (or both?) lives in Japan or somewhere. They have been doing their squelshy 8 bit electro thing for a long time and I think, whilst they were around in Leeds,  I perhaps didn’t take them as seriously as I perhaps should have. Its harder to have deep respect for reclusive electronic geniuses when you regularly see them queueing for a pie in your local Co-Op.

They did, however support Autechre on tour and will probably continue releasing records on Skam til the day they..or the music dies. This new EP exemplifies their complex but highly listenable approach to making fizzing, psychedelic glitchy electro. So much has happened in the first few minutes of opening track ‘Lu-Fuki 3D’,  I keep on skipping the needle back just to try to take in everything that is going on. Its incredibly dense, packed with a million difference noises. It bleeps, it bloops, it squeaks, it taps, rattles, snores, it goes backwards, forwards inside out, upside down and round and round.

‘Tube Dispenser’ is relatively simple by comparison, a fizzing synth provides melody whilst underneath there is some battering ram percussion in case you were thinking it was all getting a bit too nice. There are 5 tracks altogether, all of which recall the days I was in awe of every snap, crackle and pop that emerged from the Autechre/Gescom stable. It demands an interested ear, for sure, but its surprisingly tuneful and it could be possible to dance to it although I’m not going to let you watch me try.

Yet another awesome release from the Doyobi lads, this slice of black will have you head nodding uncontrollably thanks to the electro tinged stuff put on the grooves, and if gorgeous 12x12 inch print that comes included doesn't spark off some video game nostalgia for you, the tracks certainly will. If you like your chiptunes b-boi certified, you can't go wrong choosing Team Doyobi releases on Skam Records.
