I’d hate there to be such a thing as a ‘Norman Records band'. I prefer to think of ourselves as admiring everything from Pigbag to Pigface to...oh god I’ve got stuck...Spacehog? Yet, I can’t help thinking that there will be a few people who put their coat on our peg of a morning who will enjoy this album of scratchy, catchy post-punk. Everything is in place; cardboard drums apparently played by Budgie? Check. Rubbery bass lines? Yup. Spindly guitars? Yes, of course. All topped off with a gutteral honk, sometimes from man, sometimes from woman.
What we are talking is your ESG/Slits/Raincoats axis which, if brought up to modern day would include Erase Errata. They aren’t as hard-edged as Erase Errata, sometimes enjoying to put that little bit of reverb on their guitars like ESG does. The excellent ‘Hard as Nails’ most closely recalls insanely great Athens post-punkers Pylon and veers around, over and under a quite lovely tune yet never being too nice, we don’t want to get the wrong idea.
Opener ‘Any Answers’ rattled along at breakneck pace, with Josef K guitars and Au Pairs vocals. ‘In other Words’ marries immediately catchy guitar rhythm with Siouxsie vocals and lovely warm bass. Impressively, the album is sounding even better on second listen than it did on first...and it's danceable. For fans of the greatest bits of post punk, this is a great English DIY record and a must buy. Don’t let it slip away.
