7/10 Ian Staff review, 19 December 2013

This is Ukrainian-Canadian pianist and composer Lubomyr Melnyk with his ‘Three Solo Pieces’ on the Unseen Worlds record label. The first release for them since the reissue of his debut album KMH: Piano Music in the Continuous Mode (1979), the first two pieces (‘Marginal Invitation’ and ‘Corrosions On The Surface Of Life’) were created in New York back in 2012 and the third (‘Cloud Passade No.3’) in Estonia 2010.

Each piece varies quite dramatically, from the melodic flourishes of the opening piece to the jittering speed virtuosity of ‘Surface Of Life’. It's all very cleverly arranged and professionally played by Melnyk, and not too pompous and snobby to scare away a lot of newcomers to the world of modern classical music.
