5/10 Brian Staff review, 28 November 2013
Ooooh Geoff Barrow and Clint Mansell are fans so they MUST be good?
The Fauns are a 6-piece, female-fronted band from Bristol who do that whole modern stadium shoegaze thing very, very well. It’s hard to know what to say when you’ve consumed/been buried under so SO so much music of this ilk over the decades. I was there me, back in t’day - I saw the Lush and the Cranes and that when I still had the hair. I suppose these today bands such as our little Fauns here have a more studied, sleeker sound that is designed for max digestion on that there digital radio?
So this lass, Alison Garner who sings the words right...she’s got a real nice breathy ethereal voice and that. Her coos have even graced a tune or two by purple funkstep prince Hyetal. Their music is a bit blooming ordinary though! Verging on generic plodding shoegaze radio indie most of it to my ears! The fourth song sounds like Pains of Pure at Bloody Heart. The fifth one sounds like a dull MBV with the girl from Cranes ikkying softly over the top....but without even a semblance of a memorable tune.
Sooooo....does the Famous Geoffrey with two Fs fancy her then, or is there something even more sinister going on here, as this is rather weak fare for the mighty Invada by anybody’s standards. Problem is, it sounds kinda sonically impressive insofar as the playing is solid and the production is powerful and nut-tight. Nowt else there though? Pfffffsssst...the sound of escaping air hisses in my ears. It’s not from MY arse?
‘Lights’ may be an album many, many of you will be eager to own. Hey, It’s not the worst fifth generation shoegaze record I’ve ever heard! Alas, this old boy cannot hear the appeal, it’s almost a step backwards to me. Sorry about this guys.
