8/10 Ant Staff review, 19 December 2013
The first time I gave this record a spin I was reminded immediately of that most decent Kat Epple & Bob Stohl LP on Dead Cert, thinking that there were some striking similarities between both records. Not just the fact that these are anthologies of sorts but the fact that the music was created by couples working in the same field of post-prog/space music/new-age.
Well, when I clocked the sleeve the penny dropped as Emerald Web are indeed the aforementioned sonic exploring lovers. Like their ‘Sanctus Spiritus’ LP this also recalls some of Vangelis, utilizing woodwind type instruments to augment the electronic soundscapes. There are some really lush bliss-out moments to be found here and although some of the elements can occasionally veer a little too close to new-age cheese for my personal taste the standout tracks I can more than happily chill out too.
If you enjoyed the now out of print ‘Sanctus Spiritus’ LP or indeed missed out on it then I’m sure this will scratch that itch.
