Another reissue from the guys at Medical Records, this time we have Portland's Paul Nelson and his self-released album from 1981 ‘Vortex’.

After building his own synths while still at junior high he eventually purchased a Moog and various other pieces of equipment and was given the opportunity to record an album. Now, ‘Vortex’ is definitely "of its day", starting out with the almost pop sounding ‘Automated Man’ with its vocodered vocal and then merging into a more progressive Vangelis/Tomita space age theme. It’s quite cheap sounding, but that’s what gives it charm.

Like the soundtrack to a low budget 80s sci-fi TV show, the back cover of the sleeve is comical with Paul's face floating in space surrounded by vintage synths. Which adds to the sense that ‘Vortex’, to me, is something of a novelty record. I know this kind of retro synth stuff is in fashion at the moment but you can’t take this album too seriously.
