10/10 Mike Staff review, 05 November 2013
These Soul Jazz comps never fail to impress do they? This time around they’ve taken it upon themselves to distil the development of punk rock in the 1970s into a concise collection of 21 obscure 45s from the era from the proto-punk garage pop of the Flamin’ Groovies through to the robotic no-wave march of Glenn Branca’s legendary Theoretical Girls’ sole vinyl outing ‘US Millie’ and the experimental synth-punk of Crash Course in Science via names like Electric Eels, The Urinals, Pere Ubu, Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers.
There’s also a fair smattering of obscure but uniformly killer cuts by the likes of The Bizarros, The Lewd, The Randoms and The Hollywood Squares. Now I’m no spring chicken when it comes to punk but a decent chunk of this album consists of tracks I’d never heard before, and it’s all great stuff. If you have any interest in the history of the snotty American punk underground then this is an essential purchase. My one criticism would be that a collection this short can only really scratch the surface - needless to say I’m very much looking forward to hearing what’s in store on Volume 2!
