9/10 Mike Staff review, 29 October 2013

New Zealand psych-pop maverick Connan Mockasin delivers the follow-up to 2011’s brilliant ‘Forever Dolphin Love’ this week, his distinctive ambient/psych/lounge aesthetic pushed into floatier territory than ever with watery reverbed guitar, boomy chorus-heavy bass and breathy, almost whispered vocals.

It’s got a wispy, dreamlike feel to it, with the giant five-piece ‘It’s Your Body’ suite which takes up the bulk of the second half of the album oozing soulfully from the speakers like the smoothest caramel syrup spiked with some of Hype Williams’ most potent bud, drifting from soul-pop wibble to alien Joe Meek-esque soundscapes. I wasn’t convinced by this record on first listen, but hidden under all that wibbly idiosyncratic silkiness is a heart of pure pop, with melodies which seem instantly familiar and really stick with you. Closer ‘I Wanna Roll With You’ in particular captures an oddball soulpop perfection like Ariel Pink and Prince getting mega-blazed with Dean Blunt. It’s weirder and more obtuse than his last collection, but this is another intriguing LP from Mockasin.

8/10 zuma Customer review, 8th January 2014

The big 2013 surprise! Halfway between Ariel Pink and Gainsbourg's Melody Nelson. Perfect for a early night date or a very very late back to mine. Thanks to Phill, who helped me to fix my order! Regards from Barcelona

2/10 Anthony Chalmers Customer review, 4th December 2013

This album will certainly be my biggest disappointment of the year. For a man with the incredible talent of Connan it's ridiculous that he released an album of basically him dicking about in a hotel room. Taken 5 years plus to do this record? Go back and write some songs please.
