- Relief by RMillis
I often dread getting too many drones in my review box. Don’t get me wrong, it can move and excite and uplift just as much as any other genre, but when it’s anything less than brilliant it can quickly dissolve into a cold tedium with too little detail or character to warrant too many words...and even when it’s exceptional it can generally be explained clearly enough in a sentence or two.
Not so much this new one from rmillis, a gorgeously detailed collection of delicately melodic drones which shimmer and shift almost imperceptibly through a variety of weightless tone shapes and more earthy field recordings and puttering, hard-to-place booms and clanks. A particular highlight on first listen is the opener to side B, ‘Awaj Arepo’, with a beautiful warm womby bass loop which brings to mind Polmo Polpo’s ‘Like Hearts Swelling’, thrown into harsh relief by the chill-drones and what sounds like someone bashing the inside of a piano in lengthy closer ‘Relief’, which starts out tense and dark before eventually dissolving into meditative peace drones to bring the album to a thoughtful close. The sounds throughout this album are intoxicating and completely absorbing, you’ll forget all about whatever it was that was stressing you.
