Sacred Bones hit us with this back-to-the-old-school goth rock record by The Hunt.

Originally hailing from New York and now based in Boston MA, The Hunt make the kind of overcoat wearing goth/punk that teenagers were listening to in the 80s in bedrooms adorned with Sisters Of Mercy posters. The term “goth” seems to mean something totally different these days, more of a heavy metal/emo sort of hybrid, but forget all that: this is the old style that I experienced in the rock discos back in my youth.

Echoes of early Cure, a bit of Joy Division attitude, even a dash of melodic U2 style riffage. Production-wise it sounds pretty old too, quite tinny and almost live sounding. I can’t quite decide whether this is good or bad. It certainly gives an authentic feel to the record, but I can’t really see them giving Interpol a run for their money though!
