Madlib’s ‘Medicine Show’ series is restlessly brilliant but intimidating in its scale, with ‘Lib churning out 13 albums in little over a year, a dizzying tour through the world’s musical riches along with collaborations with various rappers all held together by his stumbling, relentlessly groovy, sample-happy style.

Those without the funds or stamina to tackle the full collection have reason to celebrate this week as this 20 track LP (actual track list much longer than the one in the press release for some reason) has turned up with selected highlights from the series, with some hard-hitting rap cuts featuring the likes of Guilty Simpson, DOOM and J Dilla rubbing shoulders with exotic sampledelica numbers like ‘African Voodoo Queen’ and ‘Afrosound Panorama’. Of the rap tracks, Guilty Simpson’s ‘The Paper’ (from the very first volume), Dilla’s ‘Plastic Cup’ and Madlib’s own ‘The Poet’ are highlights, but as you’d imagine from a collection culled from such vast and acclaimed source material this impresses throughout.
