- Nirvana EP by Sam Smith
7/10 Phil Staff review, 14 November 2013
I thought Sam Smith made cheap beer that gave you extraordinarily bad hangovers. Apparently that is Samuel Smith and Sam Smith is, in fact, a dude who sings with his own voice and everything. His name may seem familiar from his prior warblings with Disclosure, more accurately ‘Latch’ which turned up in vanloads every day as it stormed the nation's consciousness like AIDS did.
Anyway here the Samster is going solo with 4 tunes on his debut EP of modern day soul. ‘Safe With Me’ is a lush sounding tune with a minimal James Blake clicky style beat and some strong souly sexy vocals that will make your pants fly off. As soon as you hit the chorus there’s some mental vocal effects which remind me a little of Tim Exile’s ‘Family Galaxy’ (which still sounds bonkers).
Throughout the EP the vocals are smooth, the songs are smooth, the beats are smooth. Hell it’s all smooth. Flip the EP over to check out Sam’s gentle side as the 2 tracks here are just him and piano and accoustic guitar. These are a little X Factor for my tastes but I can pretty much guarantee that Sam will get laid after this little venture.
