- Different Drummer by King Champion Sounds
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 18 October 2013
Never judge a book by its cover, apparently. From appearance only, I would seem a middle-aged bookish fop which completely belies the roaring sex machine that lies beneath. Similarly, this new record fronted by a man who used to go under the name The Bent Moustache could give you the idea that it's a re-issue of 1950s rock and roll. Just seconds after putting the needle on the record I’ve changed my idea somewhat.
The opening track ‘Here We Go Again’ is a brass-led stomper reminding me of Gallon Drunk, Rocket from the Crypt with a thumping bassline and some stinging guitars. It's great, but not as good as ‘Orbit Macht Frei’ which has some seriously ethereal guitar underneath some spoken word vocals and launches into a terrific end section with some full-on brass workouts and nice jangling guitars, half Dexy’s, half PiL.
‘World Of Confusion’ is another stormingly energetic track which bounds along like a particularly excitable puppy, brass a-parping. Sometimes I’m reminded of the more commercial ‘Worlds of Collision’-era Pere Ubu, particularly with some of the vocals (less squeaky), at other times there is a lot of Teardrop Explodes in the mixture of jangly guitars and brass. Good. This is good. I’m happy.
