Hot on the heels of their 12” for Diagonal is another fine plate from Shit & Shine, whom I’ve somewhat of a soft spot for. The aforementioned 12” saw them exploring techno and warped disco/ house territory. I’m sure the departure in style was a bit of a shock to many of their followers yet it was still clearly the work of Shit & Shine. I guess his/ their music in some ways has always had an affinity with techno/ house/ disco/ whatever, albeit a primal caveman version, but really man has been dancing to the beat of the drum since the dawn of time. Man will always crave transcendence and this kind of hypnotic repetition is just a catalyst. It’s all the same thing in essence.
So anyway, this most amusingly titled 12” (Hype Williams parody fellow nerds will have clocked) is another belter.‘Panther Piss’ is a return to fucked up disco mode with sampled loops and loads of weird electronic sounds making what’s a straight forward groove into something unmistakably Shit & Shine. It’s dancefloor friendly I suppose but also kinda bizarre.‘Stop Being Sexual’ is a stripped back percussive thing that sounds like it could be a human beatbox then lunges into a heavy hip-hop groove with a fat ass kick and some dialogue samples splattered in effects. Again it’s a steady, accessible tune but has that freaky edge.
Over on the flip ‘Darth Vader Flavour’ throbs along and becomes increasingly more deranged as little sounds creep in and out of the mix as the groove stutters in places. ‘Corvette Museum’ sounds like some apocalyptic disco heard from a few streets away then plunges into shape throwing inducing disco/ funk madness with totally filthy filtering and occasional booming bass eruptions. There’s a female vocal sample saying “I love you” which you would never imagine could appear in a Shit & Shine tune but it works to great effect and we well know that once these guys lock into a groove they can be pretty funky, despite the raw production that would have most house/ disco producers hanging themselves from disco balls. Finally ‘Public Display Of Pussy whipped’ is a heavy, laid back, solid funk groove with sampled R&B female vocal which sounds familiar but I can’t place it. It get’s all grubby with some effects but is still eminently danceable if you’re that way inclined. After that Theo Parrish re-edit they did I like to think that the heads in Detroit are now Shit & Shine fans. I could well imagine Moodyman dropping this actually.
