7/10 Mike Staff review, 01 November 2013

We’re approaching the end of the day and my head hurts from too much reviewing but I’m going to squeeze one out about this latest one from “the French Heads” Aqua Nebula Oscillator because I’m off for the rest of the week and nobody who’s in the office is quite as keen on all this weed-fried wah-worshipping jam rock as I am.

The album starts slow with some spoken female vocals on the ominous and downbeat ‘Spiritus Mundi’ and it’s not until third track ‘Turn On Your Mind’ that they really head out into full stratospheric psych-rock jamming territory with the pounding drums and overblown guitar tones reminding me of the thoroughly enjoyable Bo Ningen album with added Acid Mothers Temple.

There are more quiet and contemplative moments on this album than I expected, giving it a slight ritualistic feeling at times but also venturing into an off-kilter Americana place on tracks like the Tom Waitsian ‘Jungle Man’, so the overall effect is an album which shifts from downbeat Carlton Melton-ish stoner chunter and out-folk weirdness to more wild and acrobatic hard-psych action. Truly psychedelic stuff as always from these mysterious fellas, although I have to admit I kinda wish there was a lot more of the loud stuff and a bit less meandering going on.
