8/10 Mike Staff review, 10 January 2014
Pure tone fans have a reason to celebrate this week as Important drop the much-anticipated collaborative LP from two leading lights in the genre. Former pro-skater Duane Pitre and minimal giant ELEH carve out two lengthy pieces on this LP. On side A ‘Sine Pools’ involves slowly fluctuating toneswells interacting subtly and patiently over a soft DC buzz, conjuring gliding drones and shuddering overtones, suspending the listener in a trance-inducing sonic amniotic sac.
Switching the record off to turn it over, I realise the DC buzz is some kind of earthing problem on the office stereo which has only become noticeable because I turned it up so loud. I repeat, ignore my comment about the DC buzz. Side 2’s ‘Wave Ramp’ starts with much more intensity, a buzzsaw tone which swells in pitch and volume and then recedes to a warm bottom-end hum, it swells and recedes and phases through the piece, and about a third of the way through it’s joined by a beautiful glassy treble drone. I think I prefer this second piece but they’re both very much cut from the same cloth...if this is a record you want to listen to then I expect you already know!
