- Jamaica Plain by Sore Eros & Kurt Vile
8/10 Mike Staff review, 07 February 2014
This Sore Eros & Kurt Vile 10" comes in an uncommonly thick green card sleeve with the artwork screenprinted on it, dead classy. On side A there's the lengthy 'Jamaica Plain', a twinkly guitar instrumental that makes you think of beach sunsets and long, muggy summer nights. The two guitars are eventually joined by some understated drums and drones but the general mood is tranquil throughout. Super relaxing.
Over on the other side the Kurt Vile fans will find something closer to what they were expecting, as 'Serum' is the first vocal track here, with some sleepy mumbles over a patchwork of heady drones and twinkling guitars and unsettling synth effects, a mournful, breathy trudge through a twinkling landscape of electro acoustic prettiness. Finally 'Calling Out Of Work' gets even sparser and weirder, with some sadly strummed guitar and weird dub-echoed synth details. Halfway through we lose the guitar and it's just the dubby ambient synths drifting along all dreamlike, like a ghost ship.
This is a strange and beautiful collaboration, just don't expect pop songs.
