Where did the fun go? In the past few years it seems like everyone who makes music takes themselves so deadly serious that the enjoyment has been all but squeezed out altogether in favour of chin-strokey voyages through otherworldly doom drones or self-indulgent, purposefully obtuse home recorded experimentalism. Some days I work my way through my review pile with a mounting sense of despair as one by one perfectly capable artists present their minutely detailed textural explorations, field recordings of butterflies, interminable repeato jams and songs constructed entirely from sounds made by paperclips.
Isn’t it time someone did something that sounds like they’re enjoying themselves without it turning into some kind of overblown head-scratching freak-pop like Oingo Boingo’s more indulgent moments or Chrome Hoof’s recent over-polished neon funk-rock overdose? Well that might be where White Denim come in. Their new LP is a bright and sunny collection which mixes elements of classic rock, soul and pop into an unashamedly fun soup of Thin Lizzy riffs and Supertramp hooks and Allman Brothers guitar slink which will stick in your head for weeks, like a collection of long-lost ‘70s hits freshly unearthed for a post-millennial audience.
On one hand it is audaciously throwback - if someone played it to me blind and asked me when it came out, I’d naturally assume the ‘60s or ‘70s. If I was in a more irritable mood today I might have less patience for this record but for some reason it’s really hitting the spot right now. The brash brassy soul-pop of ‘Come Back’ with its Speedy & Jimmy-inspired guitar interplay is a particular highlight but this whole record is like a ray of sunshine on our increasingly autumnal office. When they quieten things down there’s a nice kind of Steely Dan meets Sandro Perri feel that I’m appreciating too. It’s a taut, brightly textured collection which will make you boogie - don’t bother trying to resist.
