8/10 Ian Staff review, 25 October 2013
Rob and Sean are back with this little EP/mini album ‘L-Event’, a direct follow up to their hugely successful album ‘Exai’ with the cover artwork being of similar style. Four tracks in just over 26 minutes of Autechre’s usual brand of juddering, urgent electronica, it seems that after 1998’s LP5 the guys made a transition from almost ambient IDM to a more chaotic collision of rhythm and electronic noise, this divided a lot of fans and now it would seem that you either ‘get’ Autechre, or you don’t, this is certainly a test of that.
These tracks are much in the same vein of ‘Exai’, with lots of creeks and clicks over sometimes barely audible synth melody, ‘M39 Diffain’ has a great juddering bass thump over a distant, almost silent synth drone, final track ‘Newbound’ is a highlight with the boys treating us to an actual tune, a rare thing in Autechre world i can tell you. To an outsider Autechre’s music can sometimes be a little hard to swallow, this EP probably won’t draw in many new fans but to a veteran ‘Techre fan like myself, well they can’t do any wrong really.
