Mazes return with a lo-fi stopgap between their recent ‘Ores & Minerals’ LP and whatever lies ahead.
For the most part it’s a chance to revisit ‘Ores & Minerals’ material with the benefit of hindsight, but they throw in a few curveballs too, just to keep things in. ter. rest. ing.
Opening newy ‘Hayhever Wristband’ points the way taking the groups earlier ‘indie-rock’ efforts and processing them via their recent groovier, krautrock tendencies, bringing a sense of urgency to the blurzz and the bridging the divide between the two beautifully. There’s a subtle variant of the ‘O&M’ stand-out/Lungfish worshipping ‘Daniel Higgs Particle’ (retitled ‘Higgs Boson’ here) that doesn’t go out on a limb or do anything crazy, rather presents a more relaxed confident performance of the track. A live version with no-one watching.
Then there’s an actual Lungfish cover (come on lads, get it out of your system) ‘Organ Harvest’ which, of course, is always welcome. Elsewhere there’s the laidback home comfort recordings ‘Cicida’, and ‘Notes Between’ alongside fully realised efforts like the excellent ‘Sandgrown’ (certainly a keeper for the new album fo’ real) and ‘Donovan’ (which I’m sure is on Ores & Minerals but I can’t be arsed to check, sorry). All bookended by a cool cut-up drums and noise intro/outro.
Great EP that keeps those kids down at Fat Cat busy while keeping us fans in the loop with whazzup in Mazes town.
