You know you can trust Numero Group. They're always unearthing things I've never heard of that fairly consistently make my ears very happy. This week, for example, they've turned up this 1973 album from Family Circle. Led by 19-year-old Charles Jr and all aged between 15 and 20, the Simmons siblings of Newark, New Jersey. The Jackson Five this ain't though (with the exception of 'Well Runs Dry' which is a direct J5 pastiche bordering on plagiarism) - generally speaking these lot specialised in more gospel-tinged soul ballads from the Al Green/Marvin Gaye school of romance, with tasteful backing and beautiful vocal harmonies.
There's lots of great slow dances on here and even when they do up the tempo a little there's something quite melancholic about it. It's easy to see how this lot were overlooked with the proliferation of amazing soul artists doing the rounds at the time, but if that kind of thing is your bag then you'll find this an incredibly charming bit of family fun. They don't make them like this any more.
