- Song Of A Gypsy (Deluxe Edition) by Damon
9/10 Andrew 6th August 2014
Now Again do the business once more. Egon truly is a servant to obscure music, his label has a long and noble history of presenting beautifully realised reissues of long forgotten music, however what really sets them apart is the manner in which they achieve this. This isn't a quick buck exercise, real detective work goes into these releases and the winner is the customer AND the artists.
Egon spends time tracking down the artists, getting to know them, establishing the true history of how the music came to be recorded and then often forgotten. Old recordings recovered from dusty boxes in garages, back rooms and attics are painstakingly recovered and prepared for reissue. The artists finally gets a voice and even better get a payday.
What of the music? This is lovely stuff. I first came across Damon via Egons superb compilation 'Forge Your Own Chains' that featured 'Don't You Feel Me'. That tracks slightly eerie psychedelic balladry was a highlight of a very strong selection of tunes. This LP lives up to that standard. From the start the title track gives you the fuzzy, funky folk with that same tinge of psychedelic magic and the quality maintains throughout the LP. The yearning 'Did You Ever' followed by 'Funky Funky Blues' demonstrate that this is no one track wonder. It almost feels wrong to listen to some of these tracks in the daylight, it feels they should be played at night under the dim lights of a steamy bar.
The extensive liner notes also give a fascinating back story, highlighting Damon's fleeting close shave with success. Treating yourself to this deluxe edition also provides you with additional tracks that help you get a sense of the development of the music contained within the album proper with demo versions and tracks that predate the album. Just when you think the well must be running dry, another lost classic is handed to you, if not on a plate, then nicely wrapped in a poly bag with download card to boot.
