8/10 Phil Staff review, 14 November 2013
I’m not 100% sure what speed to play this at. I’m usually pretty good with this but now I’m stumped. There are literally no markers or hints anywhere on the record. I’m gonna go with 33rpm as the press release says it’s slow and brooding. So then, Age Coin are a pair of Danish folk from bands such as Girlseeker, Lower & Var. This is the dark industrial thing they’ve been doing in their spare time.
This is described as ‘slowly developing wind-tunnel noise and air-craft hangar electronics’ and that is about as accurate as anything I could think of. It does sound like a propeller jet engine in the distance throbbing in some huge echoey room with some robots clanking about. About half way through it goes a little more techno with a slow thumping bass drum and some scraping electronics. This is a dark brooding techno listen.
As is the flipside and it’s starting to make sense now. I’m thinking it sounds a little like later Godflesh or some of the mellower Scorn tracks. It’s heavy man. Perhaps too heavy for most but if you like heavy, want heavy, need heavy, cravy heavy or are just fat then you’ll be wanting to get your ears around this crushing LP on Alter. Nice lads.
