The office post-it goblin has been up to his usual business on this Mumpbeak CD. "Interesting proggy instrumentals, King Crimson-ish", he says. He's right, this is a CD of instrumental prog, complex and psychedelic stuff with a very obvious debt to the aforementioned Crimmo but also plays around with complex Zappa-esque jazz-rock acrobatics and moody Twin Peaks atmospherics.   'Nork' in the middle of the album is a highlight, a moodily churning Dead Can Dance-ish beat with Palladino-esque chorussed fretless bass and what sounds like Ben Chasny ecstatically noodling on electric guitar. Looking at the back of the sleeve, however, it appears this is all done with various bassists (sometimes two at a time), drums and a Hohner clavinet with effects pedals. Roy Powell squeezes all sorts of sounds out of his clavinet and it really does sound like there's a guitar on here at several points. It's that weird other-ness of the clavinet taking that sprawling overdriven psych-fuzz guitar role that makes this a really intriguing listen and a bit more out-there and playful than your average psych-prog effort.
