- The Physical and Emotional Benefits of Swimming by Sebastian Palomar
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 11 October 2013
Having given swimming a miss since getting fished out of the pool aged 10 after an aborted attempt at gaining my 25 metres badge, I’m not the best person to sing its benefits. The smell of chlorine just hammers home the disappointment I was to my father, a strong swimmer who swam for Newcastle boys.
I’m not 100% sure what this tape is all about. It seems to be promoting swimming, I don’t understand how it came to be but the music within it is remarkably good. It's kind of underwater-sounding (natch), swirling electronica that brings to mind Seefeel, BVdub and early Strategy. There is a dubby feel to the tracks with squelchy low-end bass nestling amongst the voice samples and watery electronics.
Sometimes the more dance-orientated end of Durutti Column (as seen on their superb album ‘Fidelity’) is brought to mind, but more often or not undulating synths and stellar basslines are prominent. It's more a sub-sea level Boards of Canada underwater than New Age wish-wash.
To further baffle me, you can either buy the album on tape or as a booklet which contains download codes.
Odd and beguiling but rather remarkable.
