Here’s an album with a self-explanatory title. This CD, which comes in a beautiful folded card cover with an actual signed and numbered etching on the front, contains a series of studies made by Stuart Bowditch, aka Hybernation, where the sound for each track has been sourced from a single metal object. It really is that simple.
It’s a strong collection, too, with Bowditch creating all manner of cold, gliding soundscapes full of dinks and twitches and echoey otherworldly drones, clanking and tinging in abstract loops which slowly gain some semblance of form as they repeat and develop. He even fills you in on some of the finer details of how he’s made the samples and how many samples he has used in the construction of each track. A personal favourite of mine is ‘Cymbals (with Year 5)’ which was recorded with a group of schoolchildren in Leigh-on-Sea to soundtrack their school production of 'The Iron Man', a powerful mixture of drones, scrapes and stumbling looped rhythms. All in all this is a listenable and genuinely interesting CD.
