I was initially wary about this 7” because of the frankly rubbish cover illustration. Did he get his kid to do it or something? Anyway, I was quickly eating my words when I actually put this disc on the player. A side ‘I Can’t See’ starts out as a stumbling bit of raw psychedelic garage weirdness with a buzzy keyboard riff and echoey guitars and then weirdly turns into a chugging bit of Cold Pumas-ish krautrock before stepping back into its garage shoes towards the end. Baffling and impressive.

Over on the other side ‘Used To Be Confused’ is a lower key number, a laconic post-glam hangover stumble which highlights Johnny’s personable delivery and witty turn of phrase. It’s not got the punch of the A side but it’s a very likeable song regardless. It’s fair to say that this single is much better than it looks.
