7/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 01 November 2013
The MELVINS are busy lads. Eager to keep things interesting whilst maintaining their daft work ethic ‘Tres Cabrones’ sees Buzzo and Crover reunite with original drummer Mike Dillard under the guise of Melvins 1983. It’s not strict reunion as such but it’s a close as the lads are willing to get and, of course, having Dale out on the bass mixes things up nicely.
Buzzo has a knocked out a nice new selection of Buzz/Crover/Dillard appropriate material that to be honest doesn’t sound that much different than the usual fair. You’ve got your traditional fo’ real Melvins mode, heavy and foreboding (‘City Dump’, ‘I Told You I Was Crazy’), then you’ve got good time Kiss loving party Melvins (see ‘Dogs And Cattle Prods’, ‘Doctor Mule’) coupled with the ridiculous tongue-in-cheek, salute the flag with your ass out massacring of American folk standards (‘Tie My Pecker To A Tree’ and ‘99 Bottles Of Beer’).
Some of this stuff is odd, some of it is mad genius and some of it’s just plain dumb but it all works. Kinda sounds like a pisstake in some ways. No bad thing.
