This LP is a collaboration between Coil/Cyclobe’s Steven Thrower and David Knight who’s done stuff with Danielle Dax and Lydia Lunch. On this LP they have two lengthy passages of dark ambience which has been edited from live performances in London, Schiphorst and Legnica and focuses on a chilly marriage between synths and reeds.

On side A’s ‘Hard Dawn of the Atomic Ghost’ there’s lots of deep rumbling drones and static hiss over which a treated clarinet honks balefully through a canyon-like reverb, squeezing out dusty drones and delicate jazzy details over the earth’s core drones. Flip it and there’s ‘The Infernal Kernel’, which sees the synth drones get a little glassier and more cosmic, gradually introducing distant, crumbling distortion and echoey indistinct darkness under the crisp drifting synthetic melodies. It actually gets strangely uplifting about halfway through this side as the drones take a turn for the uplifting and some super-slow melodies drift over the top, with its bubbling, gliding textures invoking visions of yawning spacescapes buzzing with extraterrestrial life. It’s sinister deep space music like Dead Sea Apes paired with the more mechanical dark ambience of the likes of Nate Young or Deathprod or Decimus. Real classy stuff, as you’d expect.
