7/10 Clinton Staff review, 25 October 2013
The voice of Sodastream releases his first solo album. No matter how hard I try, I can recall Sodastream though they were apparently popular on the John Peel programme some time ago. Solo, he does a kind of quirky singer songwritery thing, part Go Betweens solo album territory, part acoustic Nick Cave, part Darren Hayman. That is if you could imagine such a thing.
The songs are sort of dark but lighthearted at the time. My favourite track so far is ‘I Want You’ which has a breezy melody and the voice and acoustic guitars are joined by bits of organ and trumpet. Tracks like ‘Glass Eye’ churn along at a sluggish pace with earnest, emotive singing, taking their initial cues from Leonard Cohen but introducing a varied sonic palette of instruments which in ‘Hanging Bodies’ is closer to Mountain Goats than anything on the Antipodean side of the puddle.
