Superchunk's own Merge Records releases this debut album from Saint Rich, a band started by former Delicate Steve songwriters Steve Marion and Christian Peslak; after jamming in Marion’s studio in their native New Jersey they had written a batch of new songs and Saint Rich was born. From the opening chords of ‘Beyond The Drone’ we see Saint Rich tackle things with a very traditional type of songwriting, I’m immediately reminded of classic '70s rock and roll bands like The Faces with the glam pomp of Bowie and Roxy Music, ‘Officer’ has a distinct whiff of T-Rex about it and ‘Sorry/Sadly’ is predictably Rolling Stones.

There are a few pleasant songs here with ‘Dreams’ having a sweet acoustic country sound not dissimilar to the vibrato strains of Devendra Banhart and ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ features some lovely fingerpicking guitar. The underlying factor of ‘Beyond The Drone’ is that it’s very “middle of the road”, nothing particularly exciting or groundbreaking here, just straightforward Americana rock'n'roll.
