Sound of Cobra and Black Sweat Records this week unveil this unreleased gem from 1976 by krautrock mavericks Embryo, capturing jams with Italian saxophonist Massimo Urbani which showcase the band on playful, jazzy form as the organ, guitar and sax snake exploratorily around Christian Burchard’s irresistible, unstoppable drum grooves.

In ‘Dieter’s Riffs’ they even take it down a notch and lay off the drums to let Urbani’s sax and Dieter Miekautsch’s keys go for a wander spiritual jazz style before the rhythm section kicks in with some solid funky beats, it’s a lively and spontaneous brew which sounds like the musicians are all having a total blast. Likewise guitarist Roman Bunka is given a chance to shine on the lively ‘Suite In Five’, my personal highlight of the set with some flashy fast-grooving Afro-psych fretwork over an adrenalised drum performance. The wild proggy final ‘I Get Two Windows’ is pretty nuts too. It’s a bit rough and ready in places but in terms of capturing a moment of blazing creativity between a group of exceptional minds, this record does a great job. Fans of the band won’t be disappointed!
