I had my finger in the slit for ages but it turns out I was trying to open the side of the record where there is no hole. Now, finally, it's open and spinning on the black round thing we call the turntable. Lighter than I imagined, this is a fluffy take on the Dinosaur Jr blueprint, those heartfelt type slacker rock melodies that are often also peddled by Teenage Fanclub are much in evidence. I’m slightly worried about the synth. Anyone who has heard Twilight Sad’s great but over-synthed third album will know what I’m talking about. But what I like about the A side ‘Cut The Grass’ (I will but it's ALWAYS raining!) is that it's gone before you know it. As I was musing on the synth solo, I fully expected the track to rear up again with another stab at a verse but nope off it went. It did, though, have the effect that I wanted to hear it again so here I am back at the beginning. Less is more as they say.
‘Kenworth’ is more of the same but with a zippier My Bloody Valentine thing going on and a nice twist in the chorus and some nice harmonies. It's safe to say that they are ‘influenced’ by Shieldsy’s lot rather than shamelessly ripping them off completely (*cough* Joanna Gruesome *cough*). They veer off into a quite lovely almost ambient outro which was pretty nice. All of a sudden the sound has suddenly gone from my right ear, I don’t know whether it's the record or my ear. Still, I enjoyed this immensely.
