8/10 Mike Staff review, 27 September 2013
Here’s some proper old school psychedelic rock from Japan’s Kikagaku Moyo. I had this and the new Seven That Spells LP to choose from - that one has a nude lady on the front, this one says “FUCK RACISM!” on the back cover. I know which one is less likely to get me in trouble.
The album starts with ‘Can You Imagine Nothing?’ suggesting a heady acoustic psych style with lots of far-out flute fluttering, but before long we’re in more familiar territory with blown out guitar tones and big chunky riffs. It’s all quite concordant and upbeat though, even when the noises are gnarly, and the closing track 'Dawn' mixes that hard psych style with the folkier sounds to good effect...it’s like The Heads jamming with Montibus Communitas. It’s a really enjoyable record. Heavy, varied psych-rock which is trippy but accessible and never tests the listener’s patience. Recommended!
