- Interpretations by Perc & Einstürzende Neubauten
9/10 Ant Staff review, 11 October 2013
Ginger scouser Cilla black sung “Life is full of surprises”. Well there are no surprise surprises here - when you read the names Perc and Einstürzende Neubauten on the same page you pretty much know what you’re getting - good heavy shit! Here Ali Wells reworks material from the 80’s Berlin industrial pioneers ‘Kollaps’ album into the kind of sound that I think of when I hear the words "industrial music", which differs to Monte Cazazza’s original definition of the term; brutal and hypnotic, heavy repetitive throbbing, grinding pulsating mechanical machine rhythms. From chugging opener ‘Sado Masodub’ with harsh metallic pummeling percussion to the filtered noise and crushing BPM’s of Rivieradub’ on the A-side.
Underneath lurks the submerged industrial/ tribal dub of ‘Liebesdub’ with cavernous sub-bass, sinister horns and futuristic electronics/ sound design all held together by a much lighter percussive framework. ‘Lunebest’ heads even further from the dancefloor, deep into bold experimental cut up noise, fractured electronics and extreme metallic noise like walking around a giant forge on Mars. Quality gear on new Perc Trax sublabel Submit. Be ace if he tackled The Cabs for the next one.
