8/10 Phil Staff review, 04 October 2013
Despite pretty much just listening to electronic music these days I rarely write about it. I don’t really know why that is but looking at the records I’ve listened to and enjoyed the most this year they all seem to be electronic. Daniel Avery is a new name to me but it looks like he’s been knocking about for a while and has garnered quite a reputation for himself.
There’s a ton of Weatherall esque techno and inspired beats and sounds on here. ‘Free Floating’ is well Sabres Of Paradise before it lunges into a housey/ acidy thing. It’s all very epic sounding with many of the tunes building up and up to spuffing point where you can’t contain yourself anymore. Weird crazy batshit sounds are used to create some of the melodies so despite the reasonably pedestrian oft used 4/4 beats you’re treated to some refreshing sounds. In essence, it’s off the wall club music and I love listening to this kind of thing at 7.30 in the morning on the way to work as it proper wakes me up. That, and a bucket of coffee.
There’s a couple of beatless tunes which work well in the context of the album and they serve well in breaking up the 4/4 beats. I like this!
