7/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 17 October 2013
Sandro Perri’s ‘Impossible Spaces’ was an absolute revelation, a stunning mix of Jeff Buckley-meets-Arthur Russell indie-soul and loungey jazz arrangements with a silky languorous feel which has since withstood many, many plays on the home stereo. On this 12” three of his tracks are given the remix treatment, with Larry Gus and Le Revelateur turning his ‘Love & Light’ and ‘Wolfman’ into blurred out synth drifts which while lovely bear little resemblance to the songs being reinterpreted.
Over on the flip ‘How Will I?’ gets reworked by Imugem Orihasam and Perri’s vocals finally get a chance to take centre stage over a gloopy post-dub backdrop with gleaming dystopic guitar details hanging ominously high in the mix. It’s a queasy and irreverent reimagining where the silkiness of Perri’s delivery is starkly offset by the growling darkness of the remix to good effect. As an EP it’s enjoyable but much more out-there than the spotless source material.
