Here’s an interesting EP from New York psych-rock veterans Weird Owl, a trippy and schizophrenic voyage through smooth Tame Impala-meets-Stone Roses trip-pop, gothy darkness, psychedelic guitar fuzz, neon falsetto ‘80s pop and even a bit of trippy sampledelica on ‘Master of the Mysteries’.

The variety of styles which the band dip into is impressive and they do it with a casual assuredness and irreverently weird edge which is quite endearing in a Brian Jonestown Massacrey sort of way, although this lot are less prone to his more extravagantly hippie tendencies with wisps of hard-edged New York post-punk drifting around on several tracks, particularly closer ‘Healing’ which has a really cool Sonic Youth-meets-Echo and the Bunnymen sort of vibe and is probably my personal pick of the bunch. On first listen it seems a bit of a patchwork and isn’t without its flaws but there’s enough interesting stuff going on here to make it worth investigating.
