I’m stupid enough to note the release of this album in the paper this morning and think to myself how Darkstar have wasted no time in following up their last album. Of course this is Darkside, who are not to be confused with Northside either. Instead it's a collaboration between Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington. They seem to have arrived at a place where dark techno-like atmospheres meet miserable rock band like dynamics.

On opener ‘Golden Arrow’ the music unfurls itself slowly and is heavily atmospheric, it drifts along interspersed by high-pitch falsetto vocals which initially disarm. It's all very unhurried, breaking down to minimal atmospheres and not really stressing about where it goes. ‘Sitra’ is bouncier with a kind of depressed Beach Boys lollop to the keyboards, it's very '80s in execution and with the falsetto vocals recalls a Bronski Beat who had only ever listened to Joy Division. ‘Paper Trails’ recalls Mark Knopfler’s solo work with muso guitar playing and whispered vocals and is utterly awful.

Despite liking the idea of this project, I’m finding very little here to enjoy, for all the laid back kraut-ish grooves it's a restless album occasionally settling into a Radiohead-like futurist rock furrow but on initial listen is disorientating and lacking in warmth or enjoyable dynamics. But perhaps that's the point.

10/10 Sequins Customer review, 8th January 2014

Hello I had a wee laugh to myself when I got your email asking me if I was enjoying the record I bought from you. I felt I had to fill in the review! I bought the record for my 21 year old son who has over 200 vinyl records. I think he should have been born in my era lol! I have no idea what the record is or how it sounds but I am sure my son is loving it. He just gave me links to websites and I had to pick out a few for his Christmas! The only thing I can tell you is that I was very impressed with the process in which I purchased it and it came within a couple of days right in time for Christmas as I had left it to the last minute. I would definitely use your website again. Thank you.

I like Nicolas Jaar, even if I don't understand why he uses "water sounds" all the time (is he from atlantis?), and his remixes are amazing.
I like Darkside's debut, because there's less water, it continues "space is only noise", and gives Psychic rock and more textures, falsettos are blue, dark, and natural. It's not the best record of the year, I wish songs had lasted more, it looks that they could have gone further, but Darkside duo is young enough to give us excellent music in the future.
