Chris Gladwin is best known as being half of Team Doyobi for about the past fifteen years or something as well as producing some superb spannered acid as Dr. Derek F. So I was fully expecting to enjoy this this tape but wasn’t quite prepared for the scale and scope of what’s contained within the spools.

This is a trip and a half, opening with deep meditative keys that suggest the psychedelic mind altering direction in which things will proceed. I have to keep reminding myself that this was all recorded live. A massively ambitious proposition executed with an immense amount of both skill and visceral freedom. “psychotropic” is indeed a fitting description from the label, as Gladwin smudges together influences from prog rock, free jazz, dub, mantra rock, psychedelia, old horror soundtracks, krautrock, kosmishe and science fiction into a continuously evolving hypnagogic and trippy brew that pushes the influences forwards rather than being purely retro or pastiche and has a sort of sinister occult/ ritual/ magick aspect. By the end it’s like waking from a dream or an acid flashback.

Then you get to take the ride in reverse on the B-side which is the A-side backwards. Which in theory sounds like a gimmick but actually sounds totally head mashing and even more hallucinatory than the A-side, like being sucked backwards through a vortex. ‘II noisses elpmetbus’ is exclusive to the cassette edition and will not be available digitally. Green tapes in an edition of 50 copies - Highly recommended.
